Obituary of Catherine Clare Moore

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Catherine Clare Moore, 81, of Howie Centre. Catherine passed away peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024 at Hospice Cape Breton surrounded by family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Sehl. When asked what made her happiest in life, Catherine said her two best decisions were becoming a nurse and having a family. Caring for others was her highest calling and after graduating from St. Martha’s School of Nursing 1965, Catherine worked in various hospitals, the Sydney Steel Plant, and then the Breton Bay Nursing Home from which she retired. Catherine continued to dedicate herself to bettering the lives of those in need through volunteering with organizations such as the Palliative Care unit at the CB Regional Hospital and as an ambassador for LifeLine. In recognition of her volunteer work with the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation she received the Mable MacDougall Volunteer of the Year award in April, 2024. Catherine was a member of the CWL at Lady of Fatima for the past 35 years, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Choir, and was also a member of the Come for Coffee group at Lady of Fatima. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cross-stitch, oil painting, and baking for her family and friends. Mom spent every summer for the past 45 years in Big Pond, where she enjoyed making the best memories with family and friends. Mom was always a sucker for Big Pond sunsets. Catherine is survived by her children, George Moore (Bonie), Lloyd Moore (Melanie), Sheila Anderson (Stephen), Lisa Penney (Trevor) and Keith Moore (Shannon); brothers, Bill Sehl and Clarence Sehl; sister Margie Carmichael (Robbie); grandchildren Savannah (Jon), Nicholas, Keigan, Katie, Michael, Maddex, and Sloane; and one great-grandson, Theodore, and also her cherished pet cat Hoot. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Lloyd Moore. Special thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt, the VON, Mom’s wonderful neighbor Ron, her special confidant/sister-in-law Pat Moore, and the Palliative Care Unit at the CB Regional Hospital and all of the nurses there who took great care of our mom. A special shout out to Brett Gillis, her Palliative Care Consultant Nurse who worked diligently to assure Mom’s final days were comfortable. Lastly, thank you to all the nurses and staff at Hospice Cape Breton who provided exceptional care in her final days. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 4-7 pm.
