I just found out about Fred's passing moments ago today, December 12, 2024. It has come as a shock to me. I was a long-time colleague of Fred in the Science Section of the Nova Scotia Museum, later renamed the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History I believe in the 1980s. Fred was a brilliant man. His scientific work at the Museum was only equaled by Dr. John Gilhen. Between the two of them, they published more contributions to science than the rest of the staff put together. True seekers of new knowledge. What science is all about. In the 1970s he co-authored a paper predicting global warming and he told me in 40 years I would be able to play golf in NS in February. As I look out at my green lawn and 13 degree C temperatures today; it is coming to pass. He was an exceptionally well-read individual. There was not a topic we talked about that he hadn’t already had a base of knowledge about it. Fred and I pioneered the use of computers for collection work at the Museum in the early 1980s with an Apple III, yes, an Apple 3. It was a magnificent aid to our work. Fred was always involved in Volunteer training at the Museum and took part in so many activities of the Museum. I am saddened today. The world has lost a great scientist, human being, and my dear friend.
