I will miss you, Naomi.
Listening to your girls give tributes and appreciation for having you as their Mom filled my heart, and made me long to have had more time with you to hear your stories.
Your gentle ways, your open honest smiles, your passion for making the best of your moments, and your love and concern for your grown-up family and your friends . . . these I admire.
You and I have had such delightful times sharing our grandson together.

Q: What will you never forget about Naomi?
A: Her dedication and love of music and trees. Naomi was a very dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer in the Friends of the Public Gardens for many years. She served as a Board Director until the timing of the Board Meetings interfered with her Choir singing, and the choice was clear. Singing came first.
She continued to work as a volunteer on the Information Desk and was an exceptional Tour Guide doing tours in Dutch, French and English.
Naomi contributed to the Halifax Central Library teaching ESL. When she had two Chinese students, she gave them an exercise to translate the garden tour into English, and for one year, they were both Tour Guides doing the tour in Mandarin and Cantonese.
Naomi was a beautiful person, always giving of herself to assist whenever, and wherever needed. She was a friend and valued colleague. Rest in peace, Naomi, never to be forgotten

I remember Naomi visiting our family cottage, back in 2007. Lots of engaging conversation, time out in nature, and she took to the rustic setting like a duck to water.

I was most fortunate to know Naomi both personally and professionally. Naomi seemed to have a sixth sense about when she was needed by her friends. With her lovely voice, she sang “Song of the Mira” at my daughter’s wedding and “Hallelujah” at my husband’s funeral. When Naomi and I shared a house we got a lot of enjoyment out of hosting Christmas Eve parties and choir gatherings. Naomi delighted in exploring the waterways of Nova Scotia by kayak. When we both moved to the Northend we met regularly for walks and coffee. At Dalhousie, Naomi was pivotal in ensuring a smooth launch of the Master of Health Informatics program and she taught in the Bachelor of Health Informatics program. She ran a meeting like a pro. She will be sadly missed.

I first met Naomi when our families had young children attending Sunday school at First Baptist Church Halifax. Naomi was always very cheerful, and a very caring mother.
In later years it was a joy to hear Naomi sing as part of the First Baptist choir. It was evident that she enjoyed being a part of this musical family very much.
Our prayers and condolences go out to Naomi's family at this difficult time.

By grade three, Krista and I were best friends, and I was a regular fixture in the Mensink household--Naomi definitely took me under her wing. Somehow she really did do it all. Work, kids, and then serving a hot, nourishing bowl of soup for supper at the table after a heartfelt offering of thanks for daily bread. The house was welcoming, peaceful, and full of games, paints, music. How many dance and singing performances did Naomi watch in her living room? Probably many more than she wanted : ) But she always looked engrossed and offered feedback that proved she had paid attention. Lesley and Krista, do you remember the time Naomi and Dave went out on errands and came home just in time to see Lesley leaping off the garage roof and into a pile of literally every pillow in the house? We sure had been busy! When I slept over on a Saturday, I'd borrow a dress from Krista and head to church with the family on Sunday morning. The summer before the family moved to Halifax, I was old enough to have spiritual questions, and Naomi was there to discuss them with me. Rediscovering Krista, Joy, Naomi and Dave when I moved to Halifax for school was special. Again, such open hospitality to a homesick prairie girl in the Maritimes! And when Krista and Troy were married, I got to meet Naomi's parents, who were as lively and kind as you could wish. I bunked with Naomi at Krista and Troy's wedding. When our conversation went in a spiritual direction Naomi shared an experience she had that has stayed with me all these years. I can't help but feel she would like her friends and family to remember it as well, at this time. She said she was praying and struggling with deep emotional pain when she suddenly felt herself lifted and held by Jesus and gently rocked and comforted against his shoulder. So while I was so saddened to hear that Naomi had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and sad again to hear that she had passed away...I rather expect she has now experienced this great love and comfort again. And although I will miss her, I am also very happy when I think of her. Sending my love and condolences to Krista, Lesley, Joy, and families. Love Celeste Sharkey

Naomi was such a lovely person and I am saddened to learn of her death. I met her at Dalhousie Medical School while we worked in the same department. She was always a bright light – interested, engaged, curious, optimistic. We enjoyed chatting about many topics and occasionally went on walks particularly when she first retired. For a period of time we also sang in the same community choir sharing a love of music. Naomi’s numerous stories about her Dutch family upbringing were always fascinating. She also spoke of how wonderful her daughters and their families were. I am very glad to have known her. Sending my condolences to her family, Heather MacLeod

I was married to Naomi for 28 years. During that time she contributed significantly to raising our 3 daughters. She was an excellent mother. She also contributed beyond words to the world of work. Her commitment and dedication to the church universal was heartwarming.

Naomi was a very dear friend whose humour and happiness was a true gift to those she knew. She loved going for walks (preferably in woods!) and thoroughly enjoyed having company to chat with while she did this. I met her due to her love of music -- we sang in the same choir for many, many year. She enjoyed dining out with friends -- a simple coffee and treat or with a larger group for full dinners in a variety of places. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed visiting with them and her friends. She leaves a Naomi-shaped hole that cannot be filled. I will miss her deeply and am glad to have been part of her life.

My friend Naomi and I shared many years singing together in the First Baptist Church Halifax senior choir and with the Jubilate Singers. She was always optimistic, smiling, happy...finding silver linings everywhere despite the clouds that appeared from time to time. I will forever remember that about her and the impact that it had on me.
