Susan McLaughlin

Obituary of Susan Alice McLaughlin

Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Susan (“Buni”) hopped into our lives in February of 1939. She was the 11th generation of one of the original planter families (Thomas Beamish Akin) who were granted lands in Hants County after the expulsion of the Acadians. Susan passed away at the age of 85 in Victoria General Hospital. Susan attended grade school at Kings Edgehill, then Mount Allison University, then found her true occupation of nursing, graduating from the Victoria General School of Nursing in 1962. In 1963, she married Arthur McLaughlin, a newly graduated mechanical engineer from Dal, and sailed off to England for Art’s two-year scholarship in Newcastle upon Tyne. While there, she worked as an industrial nursing “sister” for Hawker Sidley Engineering Works where she was a first responder for all industrial accidents and accompanied patients to the nearby hospital. Upon return, she went to work at Maritime Medical Care until her retirement in 1988. She was the undisputed champion Gravenstein apple pie maker, home keeper, and caregiver to many cats and dogs. She is survived by her husband Art, daughter Jennifer, and grandchildren Hilary and Artie. There will be no service. Ashes will be placed in the Falmouth Cemetery in the Akin family plot in the spring. Special acknowledgement must be given to Continuing Care Nova Scotia, specifically to Kristin Carmont, RN, her care coordinator, and Marie-Claire Chartrand of Graywave Senior Consulting, for their immeasurable support during our journey through Alzheimer’s disease. We thank family physician Dr. Ashley Simon (Dalhousie Family Medicine) and the Palliative Care Team at the Victoria General Hospital for their empathic and competent care.
