Joseph Kavanaugh Thomson, 78
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with great sadness that we, the family of Joseph Kavanaugh Thomson, 78, of Railway St., Glace Bay, announce his passing on Saturday, August 23, 2025, in the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Joseph was the son of the late Charles and Rebecca (Grant) Thomson.
Joseph was predeceased by his loving wife, Linda. Married for over 43 years, they built a loving family together and shared a beautiful life until her passing in December of 2016.
Joseph is survived by his daughter Jody and two grandchildren Lucas and Jake; siblings: Marie, Marilyn, Jerry, Patsy, Sharon, Billy, Les, Heather, Joss, Vera, Pam, and Paul; as well as several in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Along with his parents and his wife Linda, Joseph was predeceased by brothers Chummy and Jack.
Joseph grew up within a large family and held a very strong work ethic. He worked on the railroad for DEVCO until his retirement. While he enjoyed his many years working on the trains, his true passion was operating his own backhoe/snow removal services in his hometown of Glace Bay. Joseph was also well known as a local coal hauler for over 50 years, working from the Dominion Coal Yard.
Joseph was a strong, well respected, and dedicated family man, his family always came first. When not working he enjoyed dinners at home, reading newspapers, watching ball games, drives with family and spending time with his daughter and grandchildren. Joseph was proud of his family and the life he had built. He especially loved sitting on his back doorstep, teaching his grandchildren how to operate heavy equipment in the backyard and spending time with his numerous family and friends when they would stop by to visit him at his garage, the door was always open.
As per Joseph’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. Burial will take place at a later date.
